5/-/39 With reference to your minute No.53952/39 of the 26th
June, 1939, I enclose a copy of a letter from Mr. Gilbert Ledward,
R.A., regarding the proposed statue of H.M.King George VI to be
erected in Hong Kong.
We have spoken by telephone to the Morris-Singer Bronze
Foundry Co., who are to cast the statue in bronze, and we
understand that, owing to the orders they have on hand for the
Ministry of Supply and other urgent War contracts, they are not in
a position to proceed with this order unless some degree of
preference can be obtained.
In view of present circumstances both in Hong Kong and
in this country, I shall be glad to know whether any degree of
preference is required to be given to this work.
The plaster cast is now at the foundry, at 123, Dorset
Road, London, S.W.8., and you will no doubt consider and let me
know, whether any special precautions should be taken to store it
in a safer area if possible.
We cannot cover the cast against war risks during
storage, as it is now our property (we have paid £2,000).
